The setting of Paradise Lost concerns an alternative version of World War II that persisted for a further 20 years in which the Nazis managed to defeat the Soviet and the Allies which formed much later than in our time. With the deposit of Uranium in Africa, the Nazis managed to complete their heavy water experiment and managed to create nuclear weapons. However, when the Allies started pushing the Nazi War machine back into Germany, eventually forcing the Nazis to destroy Europe with nuclear weapons out of desperation to prevent allied and Soviet troops from advancing deep into the Vaterland. This was done with the intention of retreating into a network of secret underground bunkers, then emerging at a later date to strike back and retake the initiative. However, the Polish resistance, managed to infiltrate the bunker and wrecked havoc on the facility before the bombs were detonated.
It is one of these bunkers that is discovered by the game's protagonist, a 12-year old boy named Szymon, while wandering the nuclear-devastated wasteland of Krakow, Poland. Seemingly abandoned, the player navigates through this vast underground world, where modern technology mixes with primordial pagan folklore, in order to discover the fate of its inhabitants, and to help deal with the character's own personal grief.
