The protagonist is a 10-year-old boy who lives in Pallet Town, a fictional village in the world of Pokémon. He dreams of becoming the greatest Pokémon trainer in the world and one day, while he is walking into a field of tall grass outside his country, he is stopped by Professor Oak, who gives him the opportunity to choose a Pokémon of his own, to travel in the Kanto region without danger. Oak's grandson, childhood friend of the protagonist, also chooses a Pokémon of his own. Oak gives the two young men a Pokédex, where they can electronically register each Pokémon they encounter and later let them go. The two young people split up immediately and during the adventure they demonstrate enormous fighting skills with their pocket companions, beating all the gyms in the Kanto region, bravely fighting the criminal gang of Team Rocket and subsequently defeating the Elite Four of the Pokémon League (the most powerful coaches in the region), in which the two rivals will eventually fight for the final showdown. The protagonist wins the challenge and withdraws from the fighting, to commit to completing the Pokédex. Upon completing it, he receives a diploma from a fellow at Celadon City, which certifies his incredible success as a coach and researcher.
