Shotgun Mario 64 is an hack that initially seems very similar to vanilla Super Mario 64, but its stand-out custom mechanic, an actual shotgun, sets it apart from other vanilla edits. Not because it's a gun, but because of the execution of this custom mechanic.
Note for speedrunners: hold R, Z and B during the intro to skip the tutorial.
Upon starting a new file, Mario will enter a quick tutorial on the basics of using his shotgun. He will not, however, be taught the extent of how this mechanic can affect the world around him. Using the shotgun not only damages (annihilates) enemies, but many of the objects and facets of the overworld/levels have had custom behaviour added in, so that shotgunning them often causes some bizarre effect. Here are a few examples of the many custom behaviours:
Doors can now be blown off their hinges.
Trees can sustain multiple forms of damage and will also be left singed.
Cannon hatches can be destroyed, thus giving the Bob-omb Buddies a permanent holiday.
Power Stars undergo a divorce upon being shot.
Lakitu skip has never been easier.
There are many, many others, but this hack is best experienced without knowing much of what will happen
